Church On The Trees

SUNDAY's 11:00am - 12:30pm

The Church on the Trees, part of the parish of St. Mary’s Willingdon, has had a presence on the estate ever since it was built in the 70’s - it has had its high points and its difficulties - but we have remained as a prayerful presence, in our worship, on a Sunday (11.30am with coffee served before the service from 11.00 am) and in Winchester House at a monthly service for the residents, we have had Friday @ five which grew into Roots and Shoots (an after school club on Tuesdays at Oakwood County Primary School).

In the summer of 2008 we ran a holiday club in the week beginning Monday 28th July which was well-received. Watch this space for more similar events in the future!

In September we conducted a survey, visiting every house on the estate to find out what people wanted in their locality, what was best about it, what their perceptions were of living here and what they thought was needed or should change to make their lives more comfortable.  We were joined in this exercise by a wonderful team from Through Faith Missions, as part of
WalkEastSussexCoast. We were delighted to get over 300 responses to the survey, Most people were concerned about the lack of amenities on the estate, and wished to see provision of play areas for young children and sports clubs and facilities for older children as well as more ways of increasing a ‘sense of community‘ in the area.

One good outcome is a project to be launched shortly with
OakwoodSchool, growing vegetables. Neighbours of the school as well as church members are encouraged to sign up to the scheme, so that young and not-so-young can learn to work together and enjoy the benefits of home-grown food!
